Experimental Tool-Changer 3D Printer
Designing, building and adapting a 3D printer to use a tool-changing head.
My role
Building upon existing work, but designing, adapting, testing and programming my open parts
Problem
At the time of this project, there was not as many commerically-available 3D printers capable of printing with multiple materials in the same print.
My particular interest in multi-material 3D-printing is the ability to combine the strengths of different materials to design parts with properties you could not achieve
TODO: why build a tool-changer printer instead of a single-tool one — what did it let you do?
Constraints
TODO: budget, build volume, parts availability, timeline.
Design & Decisions
TODO: tool-changing mechanism, how tools are docked/picked up, frame and motion-system choices.
Build
TODO: mechanical build, electronics, firmware/software stack. List the tools and skills used, e.g. CAD, firmware config (e.g. Klipper/Marlin), electronics.
Testing & Results
TODO: how was it tested, and the quantified results (e.g. tool-change time, repeatability, print quality).
What I’d Do Differently
TODO: honest retrospective — what you’d change with more time/budget.
